The Road to Sarajevo
This week, we had a little bit of time left at the end of our Balkans tour, so we took a road trip through Bosnia & Herzegovina!

Our first stop from Dubrovnik was Mostar: a medieval city best known for its bridges, including one that’s a UNESCO heritage site. This bridge on the right is not the famous bridge. We photographed the wrong bridge.

I love this little pub we came across. Resist corporate beer!

We were originally going to make this a motorcycle trip, but switched to a car rental at the last minute due to the weather forecast. This decision was eventually vindicated.

After one night in Mostar, we drove the rest of the way to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia & Herzegovina. This beautiful and resilient city is perhaps the most fascinating place we’ve visited during our trip through the Balkans.

With its strong Ottoman influence, Sarajevo is full of colorful rugs, lamps, and dishware. A very risky situation for me and my limited suitcase space.

The studio we rented was also decorated in that Ottoman style. Definitely one of the most unique places we’ve stayed.

Sarajevo also had delicious food, although I’m rarely patient enough to photograph food. Here’s some more of the Old Town instead.

As you can see, there’s a lot to appreciate about modern day Sarajevo as a gorgeous, vibrant city. But when visiting Sarajevo, and Bosnia & Herzegovina more generally, it’s impossible to ignore its tragic, recent history. In particular, many of the museums and tours here are very emotionally heavy, and are sure to give you a new perspective on things.
I will try my best to do them justice with my next post.
