Sierra Norte Day 2: Amatlán to Latuvi

On Day 2, we embarked on this excursion’s namesake: The Camino Real trail, which used to be an important Zapotec commerce route. This historical 16km trail takes you from Lachatao – a town very close to Amatlan – to the village of Latuvi.

The first couple hours of the trail are blanketed by mossy trees. They looked absolutely magical with the sun shining through them.

Further on, the trail enters a more agrarian region, with cattle, donkeys, and other farmland sightings.

Don’t bother the donkeys, they don’t like it.

Even though the Day 2 hike was longer than Day 1, we all found it to be less grueling, likely because this trail had more shade. We reached Latuvi in high spirits, and immediately assumed our respective hammock positions.

My cabin had a working fireplace. What a treat.
