Should You Rent a Scooter in Corfu?

Heck yes you should!

One of the first things we noticed about Corfu is that it’s not one of those pedestrian-friendly European towns. This mountainous island is pretty rural, with exceedingly narrow, windy roads. Unless you’re staying right in Corfu Town and/or are not that interested in exploring the island, a vehicle of some kind is a must.

Personally, I think a scooter is ideal because 1) it’s easier to park, 2) it’s easier to pass other vehicles, and 3) it’s really fun.

Unlike other places we’ve visited (e.g., anywhere in SE Asia), Greece is strict about who can rent a scooter. On our first night here, I hiked ~25 minutes to a rental agency and tried to rent one. But, they would only rent me a car. Not only do you need a motorcycle license for a scooter rental (fine), but you also need an international license (which I don’t have). So, back I hiked.

Luckily, my travel companion had taken the time to get this document that I was convinced we wouldn’t need. And so, I humbly accept my role of passenger princess for the week.

Having the scooter opens up a ton of day trip options. Yesterday, we had a blast just making our way up the nearby mountainside and taking in the views from above.

Today, we ventured a bit further to the town of Sidari. This journey took us to the north end of the island, with some interesting landscapes and sights along the way. For example, we came across a monastery run by nuns. (Out of respect, I didn’t photograph the nuns).

We also found this abandoned building full of graffiti! Perfect for a really weird photo op.
