Should You Rent a Motorcycle in Dhermi, Albania?

Actually, you can’t. But you can rent one in Himare!

We said goodbye to Ksamil yesterday, and took a taxi up to Dhermi: a village about two hours north along the Albanian Riviera. Dhermi shares some similarities with Ksamil, but it is quite a bit smaller, and, inexplicably, even more beautiful.

After a quick lunch, we set out to find ourselves some wheels. But alas, there were no rental stores to be found. James messaged the closest scooter rental we could find on google maps, which is in the neighboring town of Himare.”We are sold out”. “Do you know of any rental places in Dhermi?” “There is no one”. The situation seemed bleak. But then we got this additional message: “You know how to ride motorcycles with gears and clutch?”

Heck yeah! So that evening, we took a taxi to Himare and got ourselves this bad boy.

Unlike in Greece, you do not need an international license to rent a scooter, or a motorbike, in Albania. We weren’t even asked for proof of a motorcycle license. “Do you know how to drive?” “Yep!” And you’re set to go ride around in… well, this.

The ride back to Dhermi was one of the most beautiful motorcycle rides of my life. I took some risks with my phone to get these shots, but they don’t even do it justice.

James found a couple of good places to pull over, and those photos are a bit more true to life.

Looking forward to thoroughly exploring the Ceraunian Mountains over the next five days!
