Should You Rent a Boat in Corfu?

Heck yes you should!

Most touristy places have their “thing” that you do while you’re there. Maybe it’s a horse and carriage ride, or getting a massage. Here in corfu, it’s renting a boat. The streets are lined with boat rental places, enticing you to get your own speedboat for the day for a reasonable rate. We thought this might be an easier/safer way to explore the coast than via kayak, so off we went to the pier.

Unlike with scooters, Corfu is not nearly so strict about their boats. You don’t need a license of any kind to get one. Alex here gave us a brief instructional session before hopping off onto an adjacent boat and leaving us for the day.

Only one person can be the driver for the day. And since James had some prior boating experience from his cottage days, we determined that person to be James.

I one again assumed my passenger princess role. No complaints here!

Although we started out early, it was already very hot, and it wasn’t long before we found a beautiful place to stop for a swim. We followed the instructions we were given for anchoring the boat (or so we thought), and jumped in the ocean.

But when we went to launch the boat again, the anchor wouldn’t budge. It had gotten stuck on a rock, and tug as we might, we couldn’t move it. We thought this might be the end of our little adventure right then and there.

But we called Alex, and within about 20 minutes he came and unstuck us by gunning the engine. Thanks Alex! Pro tip: do not try to anchor where you cannot clearly see sand (and not rocks).

The rest of the afternoon was spent exploring the coastline, which seemed to get more impressive around every corner.

These Utah-like sandstones might have been my favorite.

Future anchoring efforts were made exceedingly carefully.
