Kayaking Rovinj
Rovinj is a beautiful Croatian town on the Adriatic Sea. In the summer, Rovinj is very much a tourist destination, especially the old quarter with its signature cobblestone walkways. Late September is an ideal time to visit in my opinion. Perfect weather and a fraction of the crowds.

If you wanted, you could spend your entire visit here getting lost in the twisty streets (literally, I got very lost).

Or… you could go sea kayaking!

I originally signed up for a kayaking tour, but the tour was cancelled because it was “too cold”. Pfff. Not to a Canadian. That Mediterranean water? Positively balmy.

Luckily, as I was meandering my way down the coast, I came across a pile of sea kayaks that appeared to be for hire. I called the number on the sign posted nearby, and the person on the other end said they would be there within 30 minutes. I took a seat at a nearby cafe.

After 30 minutes, a negligible amount of kunas, and a quick “you know what you’re doing, right?” sort of warning, it was off to the races.

The rented kayak turned out to be very stable and high-quality. Which is good, because that Adriatic sea isn’t messing around. There was quite a bit of chop, especially once I left the safety of the inlet I had started in.

Totally worth it for this view of the city.

I eventually made it to a cute little island, which was a great place to dock my kayak and get some ice cream. You can also visit these nearby islands as part of a boat tour.

What a fun coastal adventure. Possible without a guide!
