Exploring The Old Fortress of Corfu Town

We have now made it to Corfu Town: the largest and most beautiful city on the island of Corfu.

One of the more interesting things to do in Corfu Town is to visit one of the two fortresses that stand between the town and the sea.

We visited the Old Fortress, which was initially constructed during the Byzantine era (~6th century AD), and then updated and fortified repeatedly by the Venetians starting in the 15th century. It was historically an important fortress that successfully defended Corfu against three different Ottoman sieges between 1517 and 1716.

The preserved fortress is pretty large, with numerous tunnels and pathways that gradually lead you upward.

I’m classifying this as a hiking post because getting to the top of the fortress felt like a hike. Not because it was particularly long or intensive, but because it was hot as hell.

Rewarded with a beautiful view of Corfu from the top!

James, get down from there.
