Day 3 of the Nakasendo Trail: Tsumago to Magome
On our third and final Nakasendo hiking day, we covered the 8km from Tsumago to Magome. This is the most well-advertised section of the trail, covering the distance between these two historic, well-preserved villages. No need for trains, as you can hike directly from one village to the other, staying at a traditional ryokan in each.

The quest for cherry blossoms continues! Most of them are still not in bloom yet, but a few brave trees have been undeterred by the recent snow.

The trail first takes you through the village of Tsumago, over a couple of bridges and into the forest.

There is no risk of getting lost here, as signs for the trail are absolutely everywhere.

The trail continues through the woods, passing beautiful trees and waterfalls along the way.

Closer to Magome, there are several small shrines and water wheels, as well as bells that you are invited to ring to ward off bears. Stay bear aware!

The actual town of Magome is like a postcard, with its beautifully preserved buildings on a mountainous backdrop.

And of course, the ryokans are an experience unto themselves, where you are invited to put on a yukata and feast on course after delicious course.

So, despite some directional mishaps and inclement weather (or perhaps partly because of them), the Nakasendo Trail wound up being a travel experience for the books. If you like nature or culture or both, you can’t go wrong! Well, you can, but it’s all part of the fun.
