Day 2 of the Shimanami Kaido: Omishima Island
We started off the rainy, second day of our cycling journey with the Tatara Bridge, which brings you from Ikuchi to Omishima Island.

If you stop on certain spots along this bridge and clap, the echo ostensibly sounds like a roaring dragon. Clapping sticks are even provided for this purpose.

The main Shimanami Kaido route cuts along the corner of Omishima Island and efficiently brings cyclists to the next bridge. But, since we had the time, we took a detour loop that would allow us to see some of the attractions further in the island.

So many beautiful cherry blossoms. I’m obsessed.

We stopped briefly at the Oyamazumi Shrine, which is famous for its 3000 year old Camphor tree. Legend has it that if you can walk/run around this tree three times while holding your breath, your wish will come true.

James tried his best but he was only able to make it around twice. When I asked him what he had wished for, he said that his wish was to make it around the tree three times.

After that, we took a tour of the Hakata Salt Factory because why the heck not?

James was exceedingly excited about the salt. Ironically, or earnestly? Who can tell.

Time for the final bridge of the day! The rain had stopped by now, making for a cool, enjoyable ride.

The island of Hakatajima was our last stop of the day. We returned the bikes and made our way on foot to our next hotel, passing through an industrial shipbuilding area. You just never know what you’re gonna see on a trip like this!

This small shipbuilding town had only one restaurant. Good thing their okonomiyaki was delicious!
