Hiking The Valbona Pass to Theth
Photos of the hike from Valbona to Theth are what made James and I want to visit Albania. This weekend, after travelling around Albania for nearly a month, we finally got to cross this experience off our bucket list. Somehow, it was even more incredible than I imagined.

Having arrived in Valbona the previous day (a journey unto itself, detailed here), we set out for Theth at around 8:30am. Our guesthouse host was kind enough to drive us to the trailhead, which shaved a bit of time off the journey.

Loose gravel soon gave way to a dirt path along some fences and mountain huts.

I was delighted to encounter these donkeys carrying people’s suitcases.

We also came across a (stray?) dog, who befriended and walked with us for about an hour up the trail.

The views became increasingly stunning as we continued our slow ascent up the mountain.

The peak of Valbona Pass is actually a slight detour from the trail, but very worth it. You’ve already come all this way! Great place for a little break and a photo op.

James, get down from there.

After thoroughly enjoying the beautiful views, cool breeze, and some snacks, we began our descent to Theth.

Not far past the Valbona Peak, we encountered another dog! What are all these dogs doing way up in the mountains?

The Theth half of the hike was considerably more lush and meadowy than the Valbona side, offering a few of our very first glimpses of fall color.

Even in these very remote areas, you will still encounter little cafes. They keep their soda and beer cold with water from the mountain streams.

We made it to Theth by about 4pm. Time for a very late lunch.
